If you don't see what you need, e-mail me your want list. Quantities of some items are limited, so please inquire for availability and postage before ordering. Ceramic bandpass filters: Murata p/n SFE5.5MB-TF21, 5.5 MHz center frequency, 150 KHz bandwidth (use for broadband IF amplifiers).

Ceramic dual-notch filters: Murata p/n TPWA02B-5F21 (presents 30-dB notches at 5.5 MHz and 6.5 MHz). Buy 10 pieces of either filter, or 5 pieces of each for $1.00

Capacitors: 0.01 uF +/-20%, 1 KV disc ceramics. Open any tube-era edition of the Radio Amateur’s Handbook and you’ll find these used as bypass caps in receivers and transmitters.

Their Z5U temperature characteristic is okay for bypassing, but not for precision filters.

Clock Oscillator: IMISG509AXBD by International Microcircuits. A single 44.2 MHz master crystal produces six selectable output freqs. (16.7, 33.3, 40.0, 48.0, 50.0, 60.0 MHz) with a ); includes spread-spectrum EMI-reduction option, and two additional freqs. (3.70 or 11.06 MHz). SMD pkg. My hunch is that you can use other master crystals to produce a plethora of band-edge marker freqs., but I haven’t had time to experiment w/these ICs. Buy ‘em at 6 pcs. for $1.00.

Microprocessor:

N80C51FA: Can you use this ROMless version of the venerable 8051 workhorse microprocessor to produce a display in a topless bar? These feature a PLCC package.  Buy ‘em at $1.00 apiece, and get a free but used, unerased 27C256 or 27C512 EPROM for your application’s code. Don’t forget the modesty label cover for the EPROM’s quartz window.

RS-232 Interface:

TC232COE: Dual RS-232 transmitter/receiver and power supply to provide RS-232 levels; m’fd.  by TelCom Semiconductor (now part of Microchip) in 16-lead (wide SOIC) surface-mount packages. $1.00 each

DC-DC Converter Modules: Manufactured by CTC (Coil Technology Corporation), these small epoxy-encapsulated modules have wire leads for through-hole PC-board installation. Applications include delivery of isolated (1KV rating), unregulated DC power for analog and other circuits.

There are two types available:

CH-0512: 5 volts in, 12 volts out at 104 mA (0.5 watt output).  $2.00 each

MD-1212D: 12 volts in, +/- 12 volts out at 42 mA each (1 watt output). $2.00 each

Stabilize the filament(s) of a 1R5, 3V4, etc. with a low-dropout voltage regulator: try an LF15CDT by ST Microelectronics. Its output is 1.5V +/- 2% at 1 A max., input dropout margin is 0.2V typ. at 0.15A, 1V at 1A. These are three-lead D-Pak surface-mount devices (easily handled) and do not include the inhibit function found in their four-or five-legged cousins. Buy 5 pcs. for  $1.00

Diode, Zener, 1N4690, DO-35 with formed, trimmed leads for PC insertion. Rated at 5.6V +/- 5% at 50 microamperes—that’s a lower-than-usual current rating for regulation, making these diodes well suited to micropower applications. Buy 25 pcs. For $1.00

Zener Diodes: Motorola p/n SZ2648. These measure 39V and are 500-milliwatt, glass-packaged axially-leaded house-numbered parts with formed leads. Motorola’s Taiwanese artists painstakingly shaped each diode’s anode lead into a U-shaped hairpin, applied a soothing earthtoned insulation coating to the hairpin, and then precisely adjusted the lead spacing to

0.2 inches on centers, thus transforming these doughty axial components into radially-leaded devices. Buy ‘em at 20 pieces for $1.00

...Or would you rather have gas?<g>   Neon lamp: NE-48/B9A, dual-contact large bayonet base. Used in some models of the BC-348 and BC-224, and also in the USN ARB (CRV-46151) receivers as a voltage regulator.  Rated for 90 VDC nominal breakdown at 2 mA. These are recent NOS made by Chicago Miniature Lamp Works in Japan. Only eight pcs. are avail. at $1.50 each.

Connecting electrolytic caps in series for higher-voltage operation? Don't forget to shunt each capacitor with a voltage-equalizing resistor. Unfortunately, carbon composition resistors' values can drift with age and heat, and smaller wattages are rated for only 350 or 250 volts.
As a better alternative, these flame-proof metal-oxide film resistors can withstand overloads that make carbon comps go up in smoke.
Only one value is available: 100K ohms +/-5%; rated for 5 watts dissipation at 25 C, or 3 watts dissipation at 70 C. Maximum working voltage is 500 VDC, or 4.5KV peak pulse. Temperature coefficient of resistance is +/- 100 ppm typical, +/-200 ppm maximum. Complete
specifications are available on request. Dimensions are 0.95 inches long by 0.32 inches diameter. The leads are 0.031 inches in dia. (approx. AWG #20). Buy 8 pieces for only $1.00

Need electrolytics for series-connection experiments? These are NOS Panasonic (Japanese-manufactured) radial-lead (snap-in PC-board pins on 10 mm centers), PC mounted TS-HA-series capacitors rated at 270 uF +/- 20% at 250 VDC, -40C to +105C. Dimensions are 22 mm diameter by 35 mm high. Connect three caps in series to yield 90 uF at 750 VDC (max.)  Buy 'em at $.50 each, or three for $1.00 to get 90 uF at 750 VDC. Use the 100K shunt resistors described above.

More electrolytics: These are Nichicon radial-wire-lead parts rated at 68 uF +/- 20%, 160VDC, and –40C to +105C operation. These measure approximately 0.65 inch high by 0.72 inch diameter. Connect three caps in series to yield 22 uF at 480 VDC (max.). You can use 100K ½-watt resistors for equalization in this instance. Nichicon p/n URZ2C680MHH1TN. Transistor, Motorola MSB710: a surface-mount PNP transistor rated for 60V Vcbo, 500 mA max., 200 milliwatts dissipation. 120<hFE<240, Vce = 0.6V at Ic = 300 mA. Cob = 15 pF. Motorola doesn’t mention any value for Ft, alas. Special: buy a one-foot-long taped-and-reeled strip for $.99— That’s approximately 72 transistors for just under one buck.

To get an idea how much wire you'll need to rewind a coil, measure the coil's

diameter and multiply by 3.14 to get the length of a turn. Then, multiply

by the number of turns to get the total length (allow a few inches extra for

making external connections).

These relays are rated for 120 VAC coil power and feature contacts rated for 50 amperes

resistive at 600 VAC, or 40 amperes inductive (motor) loads. For motors, the contacts

are rated are 5 HP at 120 V three-phase, or 15 HP at 440/600 VAC. P&B expects a

200,000-operation contact life at full-rated load; contacts are field-replaceable using

Texwipe TX709A  Foam-tipped low residue, single-ended cleaning swabs w/polypropylene handles originally intended for clean-room use. Thrifty hams will use a swab, cut off the foam, and whittle a trimmer-capacitor adjustment tool from the handle. TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK

Incandescent Lamp (Oddball)   Manufactured by Herzog Miniature Lamp Works, inc.,  and branded 'Sol-Rex" back when electrons were individually hand-polished, these lamps are rated for 120 volts at 4 watts and feature a T 4-1/2 clear envelope and a candelabra base. Overall length from envelope to base tip is appxoximately 1.5 inches and diameter is 0.5 inches. Apps include vacuum-tube Wein-bridge oscillators and, yes, illumination. Only $.50 each or 3 for $1.00

PC laminate: single-sided 1-ounce copper on 0.012-inch epoxy-fiberglass. Dimensions are

10.5 inches long by 5 inches wide. You can cut this laminate for shields and enclosures

by using light-duty metal shears or good-quality scissors. Also, you can use a handheld

0.25-inch paper punch to knock out lots of circular pads for "Manhattan"-style construction.

Buy a panel for $1.00 plus postage (shipped between sheets of cardboard in a well-taped

Heat dissipator: Thermalloy 2225 press-fits onto a TO-5 case and doesn't require a special

tool for installation  Thermal resistance sink to ambient (natural convection); 46 degrees C per

watt. Imagine Abe Lincoln's stovepipe hat with two brims turned upside down and you'll get a

general idea of the shape. Color: anodized black. Buy 20 pieces for $1.00, or a lifetime-supply
